Animal Reiki Level 2 invites you to deepen the relationship with Reiki that began in Level 1.
In Level 1, you learned to approach Reiki as a practice of presence, connection, compassion, and respect. You began with self-Reiki, received your first attunement, learned to create a welcoming space, and explored how to offer Reiki while honouring an animal’s communication, choices, and boundaries.
Level 2 does not replace those foundations. It carries them forward.
You will now be introduced to the three Level 2 Reiki symbols, distance Animal Reiki, and ways of offering Reiki beyond immediate physical proximity. You will also explore how Reiki may support animals and their caregivers through change, uncertainty, ageing, illness, separation, and other significant life experiences.
Although the methods expand, the heart of the practice remains the same:
- You are a conduit for Reiki, not its source.
- The animal remains a participant rather than a passive recipient.
- Reiki is offered rather than imposed.
- Consent, choice, and boundaries continue to guide the practice.
- You do not diagnose, prescribe, or attempt to control an outcome.
- You offer Reiki with humility and release it for the highest good.
Level 2 is therefore not simply a collection of new techniques. It is an invitation to become more attentive, more discerning, and more trusting in your relationship with Reiki.
From Foundation to Deepening
Reiki levels are sometimes described as steps, but they are not a spiritual ranking system.
Completing Level 1 does not mean that you have finished with its teachings. Self-Reiki, the Five Reiki Principles, grounded presence, ethical responsibility, animal choice, and compassionate observation remain essential at every level.
Level 2 rests upon these foundations.
You may find yourself returning to Level 1 teachings throughout your practice. This is not a sign that you are moving backward. It is often how genuine learning unfolds: you encounter the same principle again, but understand it from a deeper place.
Consent may take on new meaning when the animal is not physically present. Non-attachment may become more important when you cannot observe the animal during a distance session. Trust may deepen when Reiki is offered across time or space and you cannot rely upon touch, visible reactions, or immediate feedback.
Level 2 asks you to remain rooted in what you have already learned while becoming open to a wider experience of Reiki.
What Level 2 Adds to Your Practice
Level 2 introduces several important areas of study and practice.
The Level 2 Attunement
Before formally practising with the Level 2 symbols, you will receive the Level 2 attunement.
Attunement is not a test or a reward. It is an energetic initiation that connects you more deeply with Reiki and introduces you to the particular qualities associated with Level 2 practice.
The attunement precedes formal symbol practice. Afterward, you will begin a period of integration through daily self-Reiki, symbol practice, reflection, and experience.
The Three Level 2 Symbols
You will be introduced to three symbols traditionally taught at this level:
- Cho Ku Rei, commonly known as the Power Symbol
- Sei He Ki, commonly known as the Mental and Emotional Symbol
- Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen, commonly known as the Distance Symbol
Each symbol carries its own traditional meaning and energetic quality. You will learn how the symbols may be drawn, visualized, spoken, or invoked inwardly, as well as how they may be used individually or together.
The symbols are not merely tools for producing a desired result. They can also become points of contemplation through which your understanding of Reiki, consciousness, connection, and intention deepens.
Distance Animal Reiki
Level 2 expands Reiki practice beyond physical proximity.
Through distance Reiki, you may offer Reiki to an animal in another room, another home, another city, or another part of the world. Physical touch is not required, and the animal does not need to sit still, watch you, or consciously concentrate on receiving.
Distance does not make the Reiki less complete. Nor does physical closeness automatically make a session more effective. Reiki is not limited by the reach of your hands.
Distance practice can be especially meaningful for animals who:
- Do not feel comfortable near unfamiliar people
- Become stressed by direct attention or touch
- Live far from the practitioner
- Are staying in a veterinary hospital, shelter, foster home, or boarding facility
- Are travelling or adjusting to a new environment
- Need support when an in-person session is not practical
- Prefer to remain in their own familiar space
You will learn several ways of establishing a distance connection, including working with the animal’s name, photograph, written information, visualization, or a physical surrogate.
These methods provide a focus for the practitioner. They do not confine Reiki, and they do not give the practitioner control over the animal or access to private information.
Reiki Across Time
Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen is traditionally associated not only with physical distance, but also with connection beyond ordinary ideas of time.
Within Level 2 practice, Reiki may be offered in relation to a past experience, a present transition, or an anticipated future event. For example, Reiki may be offered to support an animal as they integrate after rehoming, prepare for travel, approach a veterinary appointment, or adjust to an upcoming change in routine.
This does not mean that the practitioner rewrites the past, predicts the future, or determines how an event must unfold. The intention is to offer compassionate energetic support without forcing a particular interpretation or outcome.
Is Level 2 Relevant If I Only Practise Reiki with My Own Animals?
Yes. Animal Reiki Level 2 can be deeply valuable even if you only intend to practise Reiki with your own animals and have no plans to offer professional sessions.
The three Level 2 symbols are not limited to distance Reiki. Cho Ku Rei can strengthen and focus the flow of Reiki within self-Reiki and sessions with your animals. Sei He Ki can support emotional balance, which may be especially meaningful during stress, adjustment, fear, separation, or changes within the home. Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen works beyond ordinary limitations of both distance and time, allowing Reiki to be offered in relation to past experiences, present circumstances, or future events—not only to an animal who is physically far away.
You may use these symbols while sitting beside your animal, offering hands-off Reiki from across the room, preparing them for a veterinary visit, supporting them through a household change, or holding a compassionate intention around an experience from their past. The symbols can also deepen your self-Reiki practice, strengthen your connection with Reiki, and help you bring a clearer and more grounded presence to the animals who share your life.
Level 2 is therefore not only about reaching animals at a distance. It is about expanding the depth, range, and spiritual understanding of your Reiki practice—whether you serve many animals or quietly practise with the beloved animals in your own home.
Deepening Does Not Mean Controlling
As your methods expand, it may be tempting to believe that you should be able to direct Reiki more precisely or produce stronger results.
This is not the purpose of Level 2.
Deepening your practice does not mean gaining control over Reiki, the animal, or the outcome of a session. It means becoming more capable of offering Reiki with clarity while interfering less.
You may develop greater sensitivity to subtle changes. You may feel energy more distinctly, receive intuitive impressions, or notice a stronger sense of connection. You may also experience sessions in which you feel very little.
None of these experiences alone determines the quality of the session.
A quiet session is not an unsuccessful session. A strong physical sensation is not proof that a particular healing event has occurred. An intuitive impression is not automatically a fact about the animal.
Level 2 encourages sensitivity together with discernment.
You can notice what arises without turning every sensation into a conclusion. You can remain open to mystery without claiming certainty. You can trust Reiki without presenting yourself as someone who knows exactly what an animal is feeling, thinking, or experiencing.
The practitioner’s role remains to create a clear and compassionate space through which Reiki may be offered.
The Animal Remains a Partner
Distance does not remove the animal’s agency.
In an in-person session, an animal may move closer, settle down, turn away, change position, leave the space, or return later. These behaviours can help guide the practitioner, although they should not automatically be interpreted as proof of what the animal is experiencing.
During a distance session, you may not be able to observe these choices directly. This makes your inner approach especially important.
You are still offering Reiki rather than sending it forcefully. You are still allowing the animal to receive in the way, amount, and timing that are appropriate for them. You are still releasing the need to decide what should happen.
A simple intention may be:
I offer Reiki to this animal with respect and compassion, in the way that serves their highest good. May they receive only what they wish to receive, in the manner that is right for them.
The caregiver’s permission and the animal’s energetic autonomy are related, but they are not identical. The caregiver provides practical consent for the session. The animal remains free in how they participate.
This distinction will be explored more fully later in the manual.
Self-Reiki Remains the Anchor
Distance Reiki begins with your own relationship with Reiki.
The symbols may expand your practice, but they do not replace self-Reiki. In fact, regular self-Reiki becomes even more important as you work with subtler methods, emotionally complex situations, and animals who may be physically far away.
Daily self-Reiki can support you in:
- Remaining grounded and present
- Becoming a clearer conduit for Reiki
- Developing a personal relationship with the Level 2 symbols
- Recognizing your own emotions and expectations
- Separating observation from assumption
- Releasing the desire to rescue or control
- Recovering after emotionally demanding sessions
- Deepening your understanding of Reiki through direct experience
- Supporting your own holistic healing and spiritual development
After your Level 2 attunement, you will complete a 21-day integration period that includes daily self-Reiki and practice with the Level 2 symbols.
The 21 days provide a focused beginning, but self-Reiki is not intended to end when the integration period is complete. Lifelong daily self-Reiki is highly recommended as a way of continuing your own healing, deepening your understanding, and allowing yourself to become an increasingly clear and grounded conduit.
The more honestly you meet yourself in practice, the less likely you are to place your own needs, fears, or expectations upon the animals you support.
Distance Does Not Mean Unlimited Access
Distance Reiki transcends physical proximity, but it does not transcend ethical responsibility.
Being able to offer Reiki from afar does not give you permission to work with any animal at any time. It does not allow you to enter another being’s private experience, search for hidden information, diagnose a condition, locate a missing animal, or decide what is best for someone else’s companion.
Level 2 practice requires clear attention to:
- Who has requested the session
- Whether that person has the authority to give permission
- What information is genuinely needed
- How the animal’s autonomy will be respected
- How personal information will be protected
- Whether the situation requires veterinary or emergency assistance
- Whether you are emotionally able to approach the session without forcing an outcome
- Whether the request falls within the scope of your training
Distance Reiki can be spacious and compassionate precisely because it does not require intrusion.
You do not need to search the animal’s body, mind, or history. You do not need to discover what is “wrong.” You do not need to prove that a connection has been made.
You prepare yourself, establish a respectful connection, offer Reiki, remain present, and release the outcome.
Reiki as Connection Beyond Separation
Level 2 often invites reflection upon the nature of distance itself.
At the everyday physical level, you and the animal may be separated by walls, cities, oceans, or time zones. Yet Reiki practice points toward a deeper field of relationship in which life is not entirely divided into isolated parts.
Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen is sometimes understood as expressing the recognition that the light within one being is not separate from the light within another. From this perspective, distance Reiki does not need to overcome separation through force. It works through a level of connection in which separation is not absolute.
You are not required to adopt one philosophical explanation. Reiki may be experienced through spiritual faith, direct energetic awareness, contemplation of universal life energy, or a quiet sense of connection that cannot easily be described.
Level 2 invites you to explore this mystery through practice.
As you do, remember that oneness does not erase individuality. The animal remains a distinct being with their own body, preferences, relationships, experiences, and choices. Spiritual connection should deepen your respect for those boundaries rather than make you feel entitled to cross them.
Non-duality is not a reason to disregard consent. It is an invitation to meet another being with greater humility, recognizing both your shared belonging within the larger whole and the unique life before you.
Readiness for Level 2
You do not need to feel completely confident before beginning Level 2. Genuine practice often includes questions, uncertainty, and continued learning.
However, this level is intended for students who have established the foundations of Animal Reiki Level 1. Before formally beginning Level 2 practice, you should have:
- Studied the Animal Reiki Level 1 manual
- Received an Animal Reiki Level 1 attunement
- Completed the Level 1 integration and practice requirements
- Developed some consistency with self-Reiki
- Practised offering Reiki to animals
- Learned to recognize and respect animal choice
- Understood that touch is always optional
- Become familiar with the structure of an Animal Reiki session
- Accepted that Reiki practice does not provide diagnostic authority
- Begun learning how to hold space without controlling the outcome
Readiness is not measured by dramatic sensations, intuitive messages, or the number of sessions you have completed.
A quieter sign of readiness is your willingness to remain teachable.
You may be ready to continue when you feel genuinely called to deepen your relationship with Reiki—not simply to collect another title, gain status, or move through the levels as quickly as possible.
There is no need to rush. Reiki does not become more sacred because you reach the next level sooner.
How to Work Through This Manual
The chapters are arranged in a deliberate sequence.
You will first explore the Level 2 attunement. After receiving your attunement, you will study the three symbols and begin integrating them through self-Reiki. You will then learn how the symbols may be included in Animal Reiki sessions before moving into the foundations, ethics, methods, and complete structure of distance practice.
Later chapters address Reiki across time, varied animal circumstances, ageing and end-of-life support, caregiver communication, professional boundaries, practice logs, and certification.
Move through the material thoughtfully.
You may wish to keep a journal in which you record:
- Your experiences during self-Reiki
- Your developing relationship with each symbol
- Questions that arise
- Changes in your understanding
- Emotional reactions and expectations
- Practical observations from sessions
- Moments when you recognized the need to step back
- Insights about consent, connection, or non-attachment
A practice journal is not intended to turn every experience into evidence. It is a space for honest reflection.
You do not need to make an experience more dramatic than it was. “I did not notice anything today” is a valid entry. So is “I felt distracted,” “I wanted a particular outcome,” or “I realized that I was making an assumption.”
These observations can become part of your development as a more grounded and responsible practitioner.
A Beginning Intention
Before continuing, take a few quiet moments to reconnect with Reiki.
Place your hands together in Gassho if that is comfortable. Allow your breath to settle. Feel the support beneath your body and notice the space around you.
You may use an intention such as:
As I enter Animal Reiki Level 2, may I deepen through practice rather than hurry toward mastery.
May I receive the Reiki symbols with respect and use them with discernment.
May I honour every animal’s choices, boundaries, and unique path.
May I remain a clear and compassionate conduit without trying to control the outcome.
May this practice support the highest good of the animals, caregivers, and communities I encounter.
May my understanding of Reiki bring me into a deeper awareness of connection, humility, and oneness with all life.
Remain in silence for as long as feels natural.
There is nothing you need to make happen. This moment of sincere attention is already part of the practice.
Reflection
Before moving to the next chapter, consider the following questions:
- What has changed in my relationship with Reiki since beginning Level 1?
- Which Level 1 foundation feels strongest in my practice?
- Which foundation still asks for greater attention?
- Why do I feel called to continue into Level 2?
- What expectations do I hold about Reiki symbols or distance practice?
- How do I respond when a session does not unfold as I expected?
- What does it mean to me to be a conduit rather than the source of Reiki?
- How might a deeper awareness of connection coexist with respect for individual boundaries?
- What commitment am I willing to make to my own self-Reiki practice?
You do not need to arrive at final answers. Let the questions accompany you as your experience grows.
Looking Ahead
In the next chapter, you will explore the Animal Reiki Level 2 attunement: what it is, how to prepare, how it differs from the Level 1 attunement, and how to approach the period of integration that follows.
The attunement opens the doorway to formal practice with the Level 2 symbols. You will then begin learning how these sacred forms can deepen self-Reiki, Animal Reiki, and connection beyond physical distance.
